After a high level meeting, Sir Nicholas Clark, a senior government civil servant, is murdered.
At first, Detective Superintendent James Milton of Scotland Yard is mystified as to why anybody would want to murder him
Robert Amiss is a junior civil servant, who decides to assist Milton in his enquiries by providing inside information, and between the two of them they soon discover that a lot of people had good reasons to dislike, if not hate, Sir Nicholas.
As more deaths follow, it is Robert Amiss who finds the answer to the question who did it, even if why events unfolded the way the day seems destined to remain a mystery.
Good story, good mystery and good narration; what more could I ask for.
