CHRISTMAS WITH CADEN: A REVIEW

TITLE: CHRISMAS WITH CADEN
AUTHOR: NIKKA MICHAELS
Pages: 29
Date: 19/12/2013
Grade: 4+
Details: Short Story
              Proof received from author
Own/Kindle

The blurb:

“Paige Anthony is annoyed at spending Friday night at the company Christmas party. She’s bored until she spots the son of the boss, Caden Davis dancing and is intrigued.
When Caden saves Paige from the advances of his brother, she looks at him in a new light. A few sexy dances later, she manages to forget the horrible beginning of the night. When she decides to leave, he offers to walk her home and admits he’s wanted her for a while. Will Paige’s attraction be enough to make her forget about holidays past and consider Christmas with Caden?”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seasonal, romantic and sexy this was a perfect story to read on a cold winter’s afternoon. I liked Paige Anthony. In fact, she reminded me a bit of me, especially in her dislike of the office party she felt she had to attend for at least a little while.

It was good to see that despite this being a short story, Nikka Michaels had taken the time to build up to the steamy scenes. Too often in books, especially short ones, I end up wondering how on earth the two characters managed to end up in a bed together. In this story it actually felt natural. Between Caden’s pre-existing feelings for Paige and Paige’s growing attraction for her boss’s youngest son it made sense for the two of them to end up exactly where they did.

If I’m honest I have to admit that for me the dance scene was at least as hot as the more intimate ones later on.

“To Paige, nothing was sexier than a man owning his body and knowing how to move it.”

And I always adore a story in which the female lead is at least as strong and self-assured as her male counterpart. Paige is no damsel in distress; she can handle herself and does so quite effectively. She also knows exactly what she wants and how to go about getting it.

“I deserve to take what I want, Caden. What I want right now is to kiss you.”

Did I mention that this is a hot story? Well, it is. It may be short, and I may have wished to spend more time with these two characters but I can’t deny that this story hit all the right buttons for me.

“She wanted nothing more than to make Caden feel good, feel as good as he’d made her feel this whole evening, from cared for to the bone-melting, soul-melting connection they’d had so far.”

I seem to be saying it a lot lately, but Nikka Michaels is yet another author I’ll be keeping a close eye on. I loved ‘Chasing Matt’ the book she co-authored with Eileen Griffin and with this book she has shown herself to be not just a wonderful writer but also a versatile one. I can’t wait to see what might be coming next.

After indulging in twelve naughty nights in Mexico, a woman experiences an erotic epiphany. An adventurous elf has her eye on one very sexy Santa. A married couple hopes to find a very special marine under the mistletoe. And a holiday mitzvah leads a woman to submit to a man in uniform on Christmas Day. No matter your fantasies, this collection of four shorts will add spice and sizzle to cold winter nights.

Five Golden Rings by Jeffe Kennedy
Naughty Nicks by Christine d’Abo
Ménage on 34th Street by Elise Logan and Emily Ryan-Davis
Matzoh and Mistletoe by Jodie Griffin

Five Golden Rings by Jeffe Kennedy (4)

The blurb:

On the first day of Christmas, my lover gave to me…

Matilda Campbell's plans to spend Christmas solo in the sun take an erotic turn when she encounters the handsome and enigmatic Miguel D'Oro on the plane to Mexico. As the CEO of a major firm, Tilda's used to being the one in charge—but now she'll have to learn how to take orders instead.

In the spirit of the season, Miguel offers Tilda naughty gifts for each of the twelve days of Christmas. There's just one rule: she must accept them—and fulfill his commands—or face the sensual consequences. Intrigued and aroused, Tilda agrees to let Miguel take control of her pleasure.

What follows is a week unlike anything she's ever experienced. From choosing her sexy new wardrobe and naughty accessories, to pushing her boundaries with BDSM play, Miguel satisfies every forbidden craving. But as their time together runs out, she must decide if there's room in her real life for her holiday lover and her newly discovered kinky side.

This was a fun and very kinky story. I loved the idea of ‘The Twelve Kinky Days of Christmas’ The plans Miguel has for Tilda are original and inspired, not to mention hot. My only ‘complaint’ is that the story felt a bit rushed at times, a problem no doubt caused by the length of this novella. The same is true for the short time span it takes these two characters to decide that they do want this to be more than just a holiday adventure, especially since for Tilda everything she experiences is the complete opposite of her normal persona.

Other than that it was a pure joy to read this steamy story.

Menage on 34th Street by Elise Logan & Emily Ryan-Davis (4.5)

The blurb:

“Katrina and Owen Holland have the perfect marriage, a home in the trendiest part of Baltimore, and a scorching sex life. As another Christmas approaches, there’s only one thing still on Kat’s wish list: Hunter Croft. But she made peace long ago with his decision to choose the marines over their relationship. Until seeing him again arouses feelings she thought were in the past…

Hunter has spent a decade outrunning his attraction to both Kat and Owen. But now that he’s stateside, his self-control crumbles when he comes face to face with the two people who star in all his favourite fantasies. Their reunion is both erotic and emotional – and has Hunter wondering if three is really a crowd, after all.

Owen can’t imagine his life without Kat. But he can imagine a future where the three of them live and love under one roof. Owen and Kat have shared their bed with other men, but Hunter is the only one who could ever have a place in their hearts. And this holiday season, Owen intends to make their dream a reality.

I won’t say a lot more about this story because the full story-line can be found in the blurb. I will say that I loved it. The dynamic between these three people is fascinating and realistic. I was so happy that conflicts were resolved through conversation, and that, although there were emotional outbursts and reactions, common sense prevailed.

I’m very grateful that the authors didn’t make this story too easy. This wasn’t a case of they love each other so they’ll live happily ever after. No, even by the time the story ends you know that these three people will be in a relationship that requires work and compromise on all sides, that things won’t always be easy or smooth for them. And because these are three very likeable characters, you can’t help hoping that they will succeed and find a way to make it work. I’m delighted to see that there will be a sequel to this story and am very much looking forward to reading it.

Oh, and did I mention that this story is incredibly hot? Of course ménage stories, by definition, allow for a whole host of situations that can’t be achieved with ‘only’ two characters. Let’s just say the authors of this story give their readers an enticing and extensive idea of all those possibilities.

Naughty Nicks by Christine D’Abo (3.5)

The blurb:

Kim has been the coordinator at Naughty Nicks, home of the sexiest Santa strippers, every Christmas for three years—and for just as long, she's lusted after her boss. She enjoys their flirty banter and heated looks, but she's getting tired of Blake being nice when she's feeling naughty. This year, there's only one kind of Christmas bonus she wants.

With each passing holiday season, Blake's attraction to Kim has grown. But after a bitter divorce, he's not sure he's ready to jump into a new relationship, especially with an employee. One passionate kiss under the mistletoe and he realizes he's had enough of looking and not touching. Fortunately, he knows the perfect way to seduce Kim—a private striptease to prove she's the only elf for his Naughty Nick.

Novellas are strange things. Occasionally they’re just right but more often than not they feel too short, leaving me with the feeling that I would have gotten more out of the story if only it had been longer. Not so with “Naughty Nick”. I can’t help feeling that this story would have been at least as good as it is, if not better, if it had been a bit shorter. For me the whole will they or won’t they come to their senses went on for too long.

Other than that, I enjoyed the story. The characters were nice and vivid; the heat level was high and the sex hot. I enjoyed this cute story and it most certainly got me in the mood for Christmas, not to mention a stripping Santa.

Matzoh and Mistletoe by Jodie Griffin (5)

The blurb:

Every December twenty-fifth, Rebeccah Rickman volunteers through her synagogue so that others can celebrate Christmas. Her usual mitzvah, or good deed, is assisting police officer Jeremy Kohler. But this year is different: this year, Becca is free to act on the attraction that has long simmered between her and the sexy cop.

Jeremy couldn't have asked for a better gift than discovering the woman he's fantasized about for five long years is single. But when he learns about the violence that broke up Becca's marriage, he's hesitant to pursue her. He fears his desires will scare her away—but can't deny his own need for control in the bedroom. Or his longing to instruct her in the fine art of submission…

Becca is shocked to learn that Jeremy is a sexual dominant. And despite her past, she's also aroused. But before she can explore what that means, she's going to have to put her trust in Jeremy—and her own fledgling desires.

Let me start by saying that I adore Jody Griffin’s stories. I love her Doms and the strong submissives she creates. Her books and stories, this one included are romantic, sexy and very hot. When she takes her readers into the world of BDSM she introduces them both to the dominating and the caring side of this dynamic. Her Doms, and Jeremy in ‘Matzoh and Mistletoe’ is no exception, are first and foremost loving and caring men who put the needs of the women who submit to them first. They may not be able to deny their need to dominate, they make very sure their submissives get what they want and need. Even if the woman in question doesn’t always know theat what she’s getting is exactly what she wants.

I loved the care Jeremy took with Becca in this story. Just as I loved Becca’s willingness to investigate what the man she had been interested in for five years had to offer, even if it scared her and brought back memories she’d rather forget. This is a tender love story first and foremost with BDSM the vehicle through which the tenderness is shared. It was wonderful to join Becca on her journey while she discovered what her fantasies – the same fantasies her ex-husband had shamed her for – where like when experienced for real. Watching Jeremy while he introduces her to the beauty of power-exchange, taking care to not push her over the edge, was heart-warming.

I’m running out of ways to express how much I enjoyed this book, so let me finish by saying that it’s hard not to adore a book that combines a beautiful love story, with smoking hot scenes and a wicked sense of humor.

When I discovered that Jodie Griffin didn’t have any plans to return to her Bondage & Breakfast books my heart sank. Having read this book my worries have dissipated. I have ever confidence that this is one author who will not let me down; regardless of the characters she decides to write about.

HEATING UP THE HOLIDAYS

TITLE: HEATING UP THE HOLIDAYS
AUTHORS: LISA RENEE JONES,
               MARY ANN HUDSON &
               SERENA BELL.
Pages: 378
Date: 14/11/2013
Grade: 4-
Details: Received from Loveswept
            Through NetGalley
Own / Kindle

The blurb:

“As leftover turkey and stuffing give way to stockings and little black dresses, this tantalizingly sexy eBook bundle offers up holiday-themed novellas from a trio of beloved romance authors. Lisa Renee Jones gives a dedicated reporter and a powerful businessman a chance to count their Thanksgiving blessings in Play with Me; Mary Ann Rivers presents Snowfall, the story of a woman who confronts a life-changing event—hopefully with a special man by her side—just in time for Christmas; and in Serena Bell’s After Midnight, an explosive New Year’s kiss leaves two strangers wondering whether they’ll ever see each other again.”

PLAY WITH ME by Lisa Renee Jones (4)

The blurb:

Kali Miller has spent three years reporting fluff stories, waiting for the article that will launch her career to new heights. When she suddenly finds herself forced to take a job as an executive secretary at a Vegas casino, Kali meets the subject of what will surely be a shocking exposé: her boss, Damion Ward, the arrogant and undeniably sexy CEO. But after Damion invites her to help him plan a Thanksgiving charity event, Kali begins to see another side of the man. And when she surrenders to the exhilarating tension simmering between them, Kali hopes her story will have a happy ending.

It won’t come as a surprise to anyone following my reviews that I enjoy Lisa Renee Jones’ writing. Just as it didn’t surprise me that this was an easy to read, easy to lose yourself in sort of story. However, this story, to me also felt a bit too rushed, both in the way it was written and in the way the story progressed. I’m all for romantic stories, and am in fact a sucker for instant attraction between two characters. And yet I couldn’t help feeling that everything in this story happened a bit too fast. In fact, I am convinced that if this story had taken place over, say, three months rather than three weeks, I would have enjoyed it a lot more.

That is not to say I disliked this story. Lisa Renee Jones does steamy between two characters so well the heat radiates of the page. But to have that heat acted upon within minutes of two characters meeting is a bit too fast for me, no matter how strong the attraction.

SNOWFALL by Mary Ann Rivers (3)

The blurb:

Jenny Wright can’t get enough of her erotic conversations with someone she knows only as “C.” Flirting online helps Jenny temporarily escape confronting the changes to her life as she slowly loses her vision. Jenny’s occupational therapist, Evan Carlisle-Ford, is helping her prepare for the challenges ahead, but the forthright, trustworthy man can no longer ignore his growing attraction to his fiercely intelligent client. Now Jenny must choose between the safe, anonymous “C”—or the flesh-and-blood Evan, whose heated kisses can melt snow faster than it can fall.

Snowfall is the sort of story in which I loved the concept and wasn’t too fond of the execution. Or rather, I couldn’t quite follow the thoughts of Jenny. The way her emotions and reactions are described just didn’t click with me. Time and again I found myself thinking, hang on, what did I just read and having to go back to try and make sense of what I’d read. I’m afraid I’m not a patient enough reader for that. And so I found myself just reading on, regardless of whether or not I understood Jenny’s thoughts and feelings. And as a consequence I almost certainly missed some of what was happening to Jenny. And that is a shame because, I did love the idea behind the story – of a woman coming to terms with the fact that she’s losing her vision and might be going blind.

Because writing style and the way words are used are such a very personal thing I’m convinced that what didn’t work for me in this novella may well be what works perfectly well for another reader.

AFTER MIDNIGHT by Serena Bell (4)

The blurb:

The clock is ticking down to midnight on New Year’s Eve, and all Nora Hart and Miles Shephard can think about is kissing each other—even though they met just minutes before. Then, as fast as Miles enters Nora’s life, he’s gone . . . and she never even gets the name of the man she thinks might just be “the one.” One year later, Nora and Miles are reunited. The chemistry between them is just as strong as they remember. But Miles broke her heart once before—and this time around, Nora’s not sure whether she can give love a second chance.

This is a sweet story centered around two likeable characters who both are exactly what the other needs but meet at the wrong time. Nora has just broken up with her cheating long-term boyfriend and Miles’ fiancé has left him after he’s accused of embezzling money. Their intense meeting on New Year’s Eve lasts barely 15 minutes and yet they are unable to get each other out of their heads. When they meet again, about 11 months later they pick up right where they left off but issues with trust attempt to throw a spanner in the works.

Especially Nora is a wonderful character, refusing to give up on her faith in people just because her boyfriend turned out to be a bastard. Her optimistic nature makes her the sort of character you would like to call your friend. Of course the fact that she is so trusting makes it a bit hard to believe that she’d have such an issue with showing anyone her phone, but that’s a minor issue and not important enough to make me think less of the story. It is, for me at least, impossible not to like a character who comes out with sentiments like the following:

“Of course we’re going to screw up and fail to keep our resolutions. We know that. But we bother and make them anyway. Because we have faith that we can be better people. And we can.”

Overall “Heating up the Holidays” is the perfect seasonal read for those moments when you just want to sit back, relax and lose yourself in a comfortable and sexy romance.

WISH LIST

TITLE: WISH LIST
AUTHOR: SYLVIA DAY
Pages: 40
Date: 16/12/2012
Grade: 4
Own/Kindle

Nicholas James has had a thing for his colleague Stephanie Martin for months now. She’s hot, smart and interesting and by the looks of it completely uninterested in him. When he finds a discarded note which turns out to be Stephanie’s wish list he discovers that she is far from disinterested in him. Luck turns out to be on his side when he pulls Stephanie’s name in the office Secret Santa draw; this is his opportunity to make Stephanie’s secret wishes come true while he gets closer to her.

When Stephanie opens the present from her Secret Santa during the office party she immediately knows who gave it to her and that he must have seen the wish list she wrote one day during a boring meeting. And although she can’t deny that Nick is a very attractive man she also knows that he is a player who doesn’t do serious relationships which means that he is no good for her. She’s been there, has done that and has no intention of going back there. But, one steamy encounter with her Secret Santa later she agrees to give him the opportunity to make all her secret wishes come true. For Nick this means that he has a short time to prove to Stephanie that he is serious about her and take away her doubts. Stephanie on the other hand, only sees the deal as a chance to get the sexual tension between them out of the way.

It soon becomes clear that Stephanie may have to deal with emotions she wasn’t expecting while Nick may have go further than he thought in order to convince this woman that he is serious.

This was a charming short love story. Sylvia Day managed to put a lot of story and character development in only forty pages. The reader gets a real impression of the two characters and what drives them without the story being hijacked by long descriptions. In fact, at least fifty percent of the story is about the intimacy between Nick and Stephanie which is hot and sensual as well as beautiful and touching. And while it is of course completely unrealistic that a woman like Stephanie would get over all her reservations concerning a man like Nick over the course of about four days, it does make for a wonderful, feel good Christmas story. After all, if miracles can’t happen during the Christmas period when can we hope for them?

A charming, uplifting and steamy Christmas love story for anyone looking for about an hour’s worth of romantic and sexy bliss.
